Parking reform in Debrecen

Free Residential Permits, New Zones, and P+R Parking Coming from July

From July 1, Debrecen's parking system will be completely renewed. Instead of the current areas, five new zones will be introduced, and residents of Debrecen will be able to apply for a free parking permit for up to two cars per registered address.

The goal of the reform is to reduce traffic in the city center, encourage public transportation, and expand parking opportunities for residents. The residential permit, which previously cost 6000 HUF, will now be completely free for two individuals per address (one car per person).

Additional planned improvements:

• Simplified registration: only the address on the official address card is required; it does not have to match the vehicle registration.
• Applies to company vehicles: vehicles under 3.5 tons can also park for free with employer verification.
• At educational institutions: stopping in front of schools, kindergartens, and nurseries remains free between 8:00 and 8:30 AM.

The new parking zones:

1. Centrum Zone: the core of the city center, parking limited to 3 hours with a ticket. A Centrum permit allows parking in all zones and includes access to underground garages with a Garage Plus pass.
2. Zone I: the area within the inner ring road, valid for all surface zones (except the Centrum Zone).
3. Zone II: extends to the outer ring road; permits are valid in Zones II, III, and IV. Underground garages are also accessible.
4. Zone III: the area around the Nagyerdő Park.
5. Zone IV: Clinic parking area on Pallagi Road.

On Saturdays, the Széchenyi Street parking lot can be used for free to support downtown shopping.

Public Transportation Development

DV Parking Ltd. will begin planning P+R parking lots on the southern and northern outskirts of the city in 2025. Construction is expected in 2026, with the goal of enabling easy transfers from cars to public transport.
