Paid parking in Sopron to expand from January 1, 2027
Sopron parking zones and hourly rates
Update (October 27, 2026): On October 22, Sopron’s city council approved the amendment to the regulation, which will take effect on January 1, 2027. According to the decision, the section of Pozsonyi út between the roundabout and Nezsideri utca, the section of Csengery Street between the Kőszegi út roundabout and Csatkai Endre Street, Kazinczy Ferenc Square, Király Jenő Street, Kőfaragó Square, and the parking areas beside blocks 2 and 4 on Kőszegi út will be included in the paid parking zone (source: SopronMédia).
From January 1, 2027, the paid parking zone in Sopron will expand to include several locations. On October 22, the city council approved an amendment to the municipal regulation. Among other changes, the parking areas on Csengery Street will be included in Zone II, while the parking spaces by the cemetery on Pozsonyi út will be subject to the rules of Zone III.
Which locations in Sopron are affected by the decision?
Under the decision, the parking areas on Csengery Street will be included in Zone II. Kazinczy Ferenc Square, Király Jenő Street, Kőfaragó Square, and the parking areas beside blocks 2 and 4 on Kőszegi út will also be assigned to this zone. The reasons quoted in the source list the section of Csengery Street between the Kőszegi út roundabout and Csatkai Endre Street, as well as the parking areas beside blocks 2 and 4 on Kőszegi út, among the affected locations.
The parking spaces by the cemetery on Pozsonyi út will belong to Zone III. The rationale in the proposal also lists the section of Pozsonyi út between the roundabout and Nezsideri utca among the locations that residents have requested be included in the paid zone. The list and the rule concerning the parking spaces are not the same: the specific information about Zone III refers to the parking spaces by the cemetery.
According to the source, the transfer of Csengery Street from state to municipal ownership made it possible to include the parking spaces there in the paid zone. The rationale in the proposal refers to several requests from residents seeking the inclusion of the locations mentioned in order to ease parking difficulties. The amendment to the regulation was proposed following a review involving transport experts.
What parking fees can drivers expect?
Under the current fee schedule, parking in Zone II costs HUF 420 per hour from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., Monday through Saturday. According to the source, no change to this fee is planned. From January 1, 2027, drivers parking at the newly included Zone II locations will be subject to this fee schedule. The change therefore affects the zone classification of the listed parking areas, not the hourly rate in Zone II.
At the parking spaces by the cemetery on Pozsonyi út, the first 120 minutes are free, provided drivers obtain a zero-forint ticket from the machine. A fee is payable from the 121st minute. The hourly parking rate in Sopron’s Zone III is HUF 300. The source compares this rule to those applying to the streets around the hospital, the Lutheran cemetery on Balfi út, the Anger-rét sports ground, and the parking areas belonging to the GYIK Event Hall. Drivers must therefore obtain a zero-forint ticket from the machine to use the free parking period.
When will the change take effect?
The amendment will take effect on January 1, 2027, and parking at the new locations will be subject to a fee from that date. If you park at any of the affected locations, it is also worth checking whether the parking area is assigned to Zone II or Zone III: the fee and the ticketing rule described for the cemetery on Pozsonyi út differ.
Before parking, you can check the zone code for the location in the zone finder.
