Tapolca 2026: Lake Cave, witness hills and parking

Tapolca lies on the western edge of the Balaton Uplands, in the Tapolca Basin surrounded by basalt hills. The Lake Cave, the witness hills and the town’s historic sights make it well worth a visit, whether you are primarily interested in natural attractions or would like to learn about local history.

If you’re arriving by car, it’s worth checking the parking information in advance so you can focus on exploring the town once you get there.

Tapolca Lake Cave: boating beneath the surface

Tapolca’s best-known attraction is the Lake Cave, discovered during well-digging. Water seeping into cracks in the limestone formed its passages. The cave was later fitted with electric lighting and opened to visitors. At one point in its history, it became dry due to a drop in the water table caused by bauxite mining, and was therefore closed. After mining ended, the karst water level recovered, and part of the cave reopened to visitors.

The section open to visitors offers a boat tour in addition to a walk, while most of the cave system is underwater and cannot be explored. There is also a visitor centre at the cave. If you choose this activity, bear in mind that you have to descend a flight of stairs to reach the section open to visitors; inside, the air is warm and humid.

The Tapolca Basin and its witness hills

Tapolca’s setting alone is a good reason to spend time exploring the surrounding area. The town lies in the middle of the Tapolca Basin, surrounded by the basin’s basalt hills. These hills do more than provide a backdrop to the town: their shape also tells the story of the area’s geological past. In some places, basalt that flowed over the sediments of the ancient Pannonian Sea protected the layers beneath it from erosion by wind and water. This is how the cone- or coffin-shaped witness hills survived, bearing witness to the former height of the land.

If you arrive by car, the road into town may also give you a chance to observe the contours of the basin. In Tapolca itself, however, it’s worth setting aside time for the town’s attractions, as the landscape and the history of the settlement together make a visit interesting.

Templomudvar and traces of medieval Tapolca

The remains of a Neolithic house excavated at Templomudvar are among the oldest known traces of the settlement. Tapolca’s history has also left its mark from later periods: remains of Roman stone roads can be found in several parts of the town. The town’s name is of Slavic origin and means “hot-water spring.” Written sources first mention Tapolca in the Middle Ages; later, it was a royal estate and one of the Carthusian monks’ estate centres.

Traces of the medieval manor house and Romanesque church have survived. The Carthusians later enclosed their manor with a wall and defensive fortifications. If you’re interested in the town’s past, the history of Templomudvar is a good place to start: the excavations and surviving building remains draw attention to different periods, rather than just a single old building.

Hospital Cave: another chapter in the underground world

The Lake Cave is not the only well-known cave in Tapolca. Hospital Cave was discovered on the hospital grounds during construction of the pulmonary pavilion. Its passages were initially mostly filled with rubble, but were surveyed later. The rubble was removed, and pillars were built where necessary to reinforce the hospital’s foundations. During the Cold War, there were plans to develop it into an underground hospital, but the work was halted at the outset.

This story presents the cave system beneath the town from a different perspective: not as a boating attraction, but as a natural feature that also had to be taken into account during construction. If you’re interested in the underground world, it’s worth distinguishing between the Lake Cave, which is open to visitors, and the history of Hospital Cave.

Railway junction and Bauxite Town

Tapolca’s character has been shaped not only by its historic sights, but also by transport and industry. The development of railway lines played an important role in the town’s urban growth, and Tapolca railway station became a railway junction. For this reason, the town is often called the northern gateway to Lake Balaton. The railway was also a significant source of local employment, while the vineyards in the surrounding area helped trade to develop.

The town later became the centre of bauxite mining in the Bakony region. During this period, the residential area known as Bauxite Town, with its Y-shaped apartment buildings, was developed around Kazinzy Square.
