Free parking for electric cars is coming to an end in Cegléd and Gödöllő

From January 1, 2026, parking regulations will change in the towns of Cegléd and Gödöllő: vehicles with green license plates, that is, electric cars, will no longer be allowed to park free of charge in these cities. The amendment is included in the parking regulations effective from January 1, 2026 in both locations, so from now on, owners of electric cars will have to pay for public parking.

In Gödöllő, the change not only means the end of free parking: parking fees will also increase. The previous hourly rate of 440 forints will rise to 550 forints, and weekly, monthly, or annual passes will also cost about 25 percent more.

The decision of the two cities further narrows the list of municipalities where electric cars can still park for free. With the exclusion of Cegléd and Gödöllő, there are currently about 15 Hungarian cities left where parking remains free of charge for vehicles with green license plates.

As an additional change, the complete elimination of the green license plate benefit is also on the agenda in Budapest from January 1, 2027, which may involve a restructuring of the capital's parking system.
