During the holiday season, Budapest turns into a truly enchanting city: lights, scents and Christmas music fill every street with a festive atmosphere. If you’re visiting Budapest in 2026, don’t miss the capital’s biggest and most magical Christmas markets! Here are three of the most popular spots, favorites among locals and tourists year after year.

1. Vörösmarty Square Christmas Market

Budapest’s best-known Christmas market is located in the heart of the city, on Vörösmarty Square. It is one of the oldest and largest Advent markets in the country, where visitors step into a true winter wonderland. The market has a rich selection of goods: handmade products, traditional Hungarian dishes such as lángos and chimney cake, as well as special hot drinks.

Opening hours

The Vörösmarty Square Christmas Market opens on November 13, 2026. The organizers will publish the 2026 opening hours and holiday schedule before the market opens, and we’ll update this article then. Last year, the market was open Monday to Thursday and Sunday from 11:00 to 21:00, and Friday and Saturday from 11:00 to 22:00.

Location

The square is in central Budapest, a few minutes’ walk from the Danube and the famous Váci Street. It’s easy to get to, making it ideal for those who want to combine sightseeing with a festive Christmas atmosphere.

2. Christmas Market in Front of the Basilica

The Advent market in front of St. Stephen’s Basilica is one of Budapest’s most spectacular events. The huge Christmas tree, strings of lights and soothing music create a special atmosphere in one of the city’s most beautiful squares. Visitors can skate on the ice rink, while in the evenings a spectacular light show projected onto the Basilica’s façade dazzles the crowds. The event is also recognized as one of Europe’s most beautiful Christmas markets.

Opening hours

The Advent Basilica market welcomes visitors to St. Stephen’s Square from November 13, 2026, to January 1, 2027. This year marks its 15th anniversary, and it was voted Europe’s best Christmas market in the European Best Destinations poll.
More than a hundred craft vendors, special culinary experiences and spectacular light installations await visitors.
The organizers will publish the 2026 opening hours before the market opens. Last year, it was open Monday to Thursday and Sunday from 11:00 to 22:00, and Friday and Saturday from 11:00 to 23:00.

The market is in downtown Budapest, next to the Basilica. It’s easy to reach on foot from Vörösmarty Square or Deák Ferenc Square.

3. Óbuda Christmas Market

The Christmas market held in Óbuda’s Main Square is one of Budapest’s friendliest and most family-oriented Advent events. The charming main square offers plenty of activities for visitors: children can enjoy a petting zoo, craft workshops and stage performances, while adults can relax with special mulled wines and delicious local treats. The market’s decorations are especially atmospheric every year, with lights and ornaments creating a true Christmas idyll.

Opening hours

The dates for Óbuda’s 2026 Advent market have not yet been announced. Last year, it was open from November 28 to December 23.

Location

The market is on Óbuda’s Main Square, next to Szentlélek Square, by the Buda end of Árpád Bridge. Although it’s a little farther from the city center, it offers a more peaceful yet still festive alternative to the central markets.

Parking during the holidays

In the areas around the downtown markets (Zone 0501), parking is paid on working days between 8:00 and 22:00, with a maximum parking time of 3 hours. On November 3, Parliament declared December 24 a public holiday, so the make-up working day on December 12 has been canceled, and parking is free that day under the usual Saturday rules (source: Adózóna). December 24–26 and January 1 are public holidays, when parking is also free.
