Parking vehicle categories: which one should you choose?

When buying a parking ticket, you must provide not only the license plate and zone, but also the vehicle type, and this is not a formality: the category directly determines the hourly rate. With the wrong category, the ticket does not cover the vehicle's fee, which can lead to an additional charge. In this article, we go through which vehicle belongs where, and what to check in the registration certificate. We pay special attention to motorhomes, because that is the most common source of mistakes.

Five categories, different hourly rates by category

For public on-street parking in Hungary, there are five vehicle categories, and the parking ticket always applies to the selected category:

• Passenger car
• Motorcycle
• Van or light truck under 3.5 tons
• Truck over 3.5 tons
• Bus and motorhome

Each zone sets the hourly rate separately by category, and the difference is not small. In Budapest, larger vehicles typically pay three times the passenger car rate: where a passenger car costs 800 forints per hour, the bus and truck cost 2400 forints, and in zones with a 300-forint rate, they pay 900 forints. Nationwide, this is also the typical ratio: among the 231 zones we manage where both rates are listed, the bus hourly rate is typically three times that of a passenger car, and in the most expensive case it is more than five times higher.

Two categories behave differently:

• Van: the light commercial vehicle under 3.5 tons pays the same as a passenger car in almost all zones; among the 322 zones, the two rates differ in only 42.
• Motorcycle: in most zones it is not subject to a fee at all; there are motorcycle rates in only 79 zones in total, and even among those, only four are cheaper than the passenger car rate.

It also varies by zone which categories can be ticketed at all. Passenger cars are available in 297 zones, vans in 273, buses in 235, trucks in 205, and motorcycles in 79. Where a category is not listed, no ticket can be issued for that vehicle type in that zone.

Which category should you choose?

The classification is based on the registration certificate, specifically the J field, i.e. the vehicle category, and the maximum permissible gross weight. The most common cases are:

• M1 passenger car: passenger car category, regardless of whether it is a sedan, estate, or large SUV.
• N1 truck up to 3.5 tons: van or light truck. This also includes company cars with passenger car bodywork but registered as trucks.
• N2 and N3 trucks over 3.5 tons: truck category.
• M2 and M3: bus.
• L category: motorcycle.

Motorhomes belong to a separate fee category

A motorhome is typically listed in the registration certificate under the M1 vehicle category, but the parking fee is not determined by this classification alone. In Budapest, the municipal parking ordinance specifically names the motorhome and places it in the same, higher fee category as buses.

In Budapest parking zones, motorhomes, buses, and trucks exceeding 3500 kilograms maximum permissible gross weight pay three times the base parking fee. The 3.5-ton weight limit applies only to trucks, so regardless of a motorhome's weight, it belongs to the higher fee category.

For this reason, when parking a motorhome in Budapest, you must select the "Bus and motorhome" category even if the vehicle's maximum permissible gross weight does not exceed 3.5 tons. Selecting a lower category, such as passenger car or van, does not cover the full parking fee required for a motorhome, and may therefore result in an additional charge.

There are also separate rules for trailers. A trailer or caravan towed by a passenger car belongs to the base-rate category, while a trailer or caravan towed by a bus, motorhome, truck over 3.5 tons, agricultural tractor, or slow-moving vehicle must be paid at the higher, three-times rate.

The above rules apply to public parking zones in Budapest. In other municipalities, always take the local parking regulations into account.

What happens if you enter the wrong category?

The ticket always applies to the category you entered. A ticket purchased at the passenger car rate for a bus or motorhome does not cover the vehicle's fee, so during inspection it is treated as if you had not paid the full amount, and an additional charge may be imposed. The parking zone operator always decides on the imposition and cancellation of additional charges, so in case of a dispute you must contact them.

If you are unsure about the classification, the J field of the registration certificate and the maximum permissible gross weight resolve almost every case. If in doubt, it is better to choose the higher category, because the difference is only a fraction of the additional charge.

Check in advance how much the fee will be
