Paid parking to expand in Nyíregyháza from October 1

The paid parking system in Nyíregyháza will expand from October 1, 2026. Parking will also become subject to a fee on the downtown section of Ószőlő Street, as well as in designated parking areas on Kert Street and Szántó Kovács János Street. During the first two weeks after the new rules are introduced, there will be a grace period: drivers who park without paying will be warned, but no surcharge will be imposed. The change therefore affects people parking in these locations from October 1, even though no surcharges will be issued during the grace period.

Where will paid parking be expanded?

According to NYÍRVV Nonprofit Ltd., the downtown section of Ószőlő Street between Dózsa György Street and Ferenc Boulevard will be added to the paid parking system. Parking will also become subject to a fee in the parking area behind Kert Street 2–20 and Szántó Kovács János Street 2–18. The change therefore does not apply to the entirety of the streets mentioned, but only to the specified section and parking areas.

The newly designated areas will connect to the existing paid parking zones. As a result, the city management company will not install any new parking meters. If you park in an affected area, you can pay the fee at the nearest existing meter or via mobile parking. It is worth paying attention to the signs: NYÍRVV specifically asks people living in the area and those passing through to do so when the new rules are introduced. Before using mobile parking, you can also check the zone code in the zone finder.

The background to the expansion was also discussed at a meeting of the Nyíregyháza city council. NYÍRVV continuously monitors parking space utilization and demand for parking. Residents in several parts of the city have requested that areas currently available for free parking be added to the paid parking system. The company reviewed these requests and assessed the parking situation in the affected areas between August 31 and September 4, 2026. It made its proposal based on its findings and residents’ needs.

What does the first two weeks’ grace period mean?

Paid parking will take effect at the listed locations on October 1, 2026. The transition will be accompanied by a grace period during the first two weeks. During this period, NYÍRVV staff will only issue warnings to vehicles parked without payment; no surcharges will be imposed. The grace period therefore applies to surcharges; according to the information provided, parking in the affected areas will be subject to a fee from October 1.

The most important practical change for drivers is that they will have to pay for parking in the locations that have been designated and were previously free to use. Instead of a new meter, they can use the nearest existing one, or pay via mobile parking. NYÍRVV asks those affected to follow the posted signs and park in accordance with the changed rules.

Further downtown areas may be affected later

According to the proposal submitted to the city council, the expansion of the paid parking system will not stop at the locations listed above. From April 2027, further downtown areas will be added to the system. These include Vörösmarty Street and Vörösmarty Passage, Vörösmarty Square, and sections of Tűzoltó, Toldi, and Színház Streets. However, the current change, effective from October 1, applies to the specified section of Ószőlő Street and the two named parking areas.

If you park in the affected areas of Nyíregyháza, look out for the signs from October 1 and pay at an existing meter or via mobile parking. During the first two weeks, you can expect a warning, not a surcharge, if you fail to pay.
