Fonyód 2026: Sipos Hill, Castle Hill and parking on Lake Balaton Fonyód parking zones and hourly rates

Fonyód is a resort town and port on the southern shore of Lake Balaton. From the lookouts on its two neighboring hills, Sipos Hill and Castle Hill, you can see the lake’s western basin and the volcanic hills on the opposite shore. If you’d like to complement your time by the lake with panoramic views and local history, it’s worth setting aside some time for the town.

If you’re arriving by car, it’s also a good idea to check parking information in advance, so that once you’re there you can focus on the harbor, the lookouts or Bélatelep.

Sipos Hill and Castle Hill: Fonyód’s two lookouts

Fonyód’s skyline is defined by the two highest hills on the southern shore of Lake Balaton, which rise side by side. There is a lookout on top of both Sipos Hill and Castle Hill, so both make great destinations if you’d like to see the lake and its surroundings from above. To the north, you can take in the western basin of Lake Balaton and the volcanic hills of the Balaton Uplands, including the easily recognizable Badacsony.

The views are not only interesting in the direction of the lake: looking south, you can see the meadows and wetlands of Nagy-Berek. The two hills make Fonyód recognizable from a distance along the shore. Set aside time to visit the lookouts rather than squeezing them in between activities by the water.

Harbor, ferry terminal and lakeside

Fonyód is a port town, and many people take a boat from its harbor to the opposite shore of Lake Balaton. The area around the ferry terminal is worth a visit even if you’re not setting off across the water: from here, you can continue your walk to other places along Fonyód’s waterfront. A row of shops runs between the ferry terminal and Panoráma Beach, making this stretch part of a lakeside tour of the town.

On the shore, you’ll find Kiss István’s sculpture of a couple, which has become a symbol of Fonyód. There is also a monument to Antal Lányi, the first person to fly across Lake Balaton. If you’d like to visit several attractions in a short time, it’s worth planning a walk that takes in both the harbor and the sights along the shore.

Bélatelep and the villas along Szaplonczay Promenade

Bélatelep played an important role in Fonyód’s development as a resort. The district was established at the initiative of Dr. Manó Szaplonczay, who persuaded the owner of the wooded area on Castle Hill to subdivide land for holiday homes. A row of villas was built along the promenade later named after Szaplonczay, evoking the town’s resort history on Lake Balaton.

If you’d like to learn about Fonyód’s history as well as enjoy the waterfront, Bélatelep is a good choice. You can combine a visit to the district with the Fonyód Museum, which is also located here. Together, the promenade and museum offer an outing that takes in both the old holiday resort and the local history of the area.

Fonyód Museum: local history and the wildlife of Lake Balaton

The Fonyód Museum is located in Bélatelep, on Bartók Béla Street, in the former cinema building. Its permanent local history and ethnographic collections offer insight into the town, but the museum is not just about the town’s past. Visitors can also learn about the wildlife and plant life of Lake Balaton, as well as the importance of nature conservation.

The museum also hosts temporary exhibitions, so it’s worth considering a visit even if you’ve been to Fonyód before. The building is a former villa, which also connects it to the history of Bélatelep. After exploring the promenade, you can continue getting to know the town and the surroundings of Lake Balaton from a different perspective here.

Fácános Park and memories of the castle

You can discover an older layer of Fonyód’s history in Fácános Park. Here you can see the earthworks of the former Fácános Castle’s pile structure, the excavated castle moat and the foundations of the church that once stood in the castle. The site is interesting because you can learn about the castle’s past not only from written accounts: traces that have survived or been uncovered can also be seen in the park.

The memory of Fonyód Castle also lives on in the town’s events. At a commemoration associated with the Fonyód Summer Festival, the castle’s former defenders are honored with a demonstration by horsemen and archers in period costume at the restored Fácános Palisade Castle. If you’d like to add a historic site to your visit to the lookouts and waterfront, include the park in your itinerary.
