Balatonlelle is located in Somogy County, in the central section of the southern shore of Lake Balaton. The town is a good choice if you want to explore the area around the lake together with historic buildings, public artworks, and wine-region sites.

The listed mansions, the chapel on Kishegy, the church ruin at Rádpuszta, and the local cultural attractions offer a varied program. If you arrive in Balatonlelle by car, it is worth checking the parking rules in advance, especially since payment applies on weekends and public holidays as well.

Balatonlelle’s location and access

Balatonlelle is located roughly in the middle section of the southern shore of Lake Balaton, between Balatonszemes and Balatonboglár. The settlement is part of the Balatonboglár wine region, so in addition to the town’s monuments, the wine-region setting also defines the character of the area. By road, the main access route is Route 7, which also passes through the urban area, as well as the M7 motorway, which bypasses the town to the south.

The motorway has two junctions near Balatonlelle, so the town is easily accessible from several directions. By rail, you can travel here on the Budapest-Murakeresztúr line: Balatonlelle felső railway station is in the eastern part of the town area, while Balatonlelle stop is located in the center. It is best to connect the central sites on foot, while the separate Rádpuszta should be planned as a separate destination.

Mansions and historical monuments

Balatonlelle’s history dates back to the Middle Ages: it was first mentioned in writing under the name Lela, and later it was the estate of the Majtényi and Szalay families. A tangible reminder of local history is the neoclassical former Szalay Mansion, which is protected as a listed monument. Also listed is the former Jankovich Mansion, which now operates as a school and has recently undergone renovation.

The line of historic buildings is complemented by a traditional smithy, an architectural reminder of the settlement’s older crafts. Statues and cultural sites

Among the town’s cultural attractions are the Kapoli Museum and Gallery, as well as the open-air stage. These can be good additions to a program centered on mansions, churches, and monuments. Before visiting, it is advisable to check when the given site can be visited, and then organize the city walk accordingly.

In the park next to Route 7 stands Mattky Ödön’s sculpture Woman Holding a Dove. Balatonlelle’s sights also include the holiday building on the villa row, which formerly operated as a MABI holiday home and later as a SZOT holiday home. The public sculpture, the building on the villa row, and the cultural institutions show the town from a different perspective than the historic mansions or sacred monuments.
