Changes in Budapest parking from 2026

On November 27, 2024, the Metropolitan Assembly voted for significant changes in the parking system, which include the introduction of paid parking on weekends, the abolition of free parking for cars with green license plates, and the gradual phase-out of parking meters.

Main changes:

  • Weekend paid parking:
from July 2026, parking fees must also be paid on weekends in zones A and B (in the city center).
  • The end of free parking for cars with green license plates:
from 2026, free parking for cars with green license plates will cease.
  • Disappearance of parking meters:
by the middle of 2026, parking meters will disappear completely, so parking will only be managed digitally.
  • Tariff increase:
parking fees will increase from July 2026. One hour of parking in zone A will be HUF 800 instead of the current 600, in zone B it will be HUF 600 instead of the current 450, in zone C it will be HUF 400 instead of the current HUF 300, while in zone D you will have to pay HUF 300 instead of the current HUF 200.
  • Double fee for heavier vehicles:
Cars and SUVs heavier than 1.8 tons will be charged twice the parking fee, although the legal basis for this is still to be clarified.

The aim of the changes is to create a fairer, more modern and sustainable parking system in Budapest.
